The Michigan Association of Timbermen is honoring the life and legacy of longtime industry leader Warren Suchovsky following his recent passing, through the continued awarding of the Warren Suchovsky Scholarship. This year, two $2,000 annual scholarships will be offered to students pursuing careers in forestry and related fields.
The scholarships are made possible through a collaborative match, with support from Forest/Loggers/Mauck Insurance Agencies, GreenStone Farm Credit Services and the Michigan Forest Association, reflecting a shared commitment to the future of Michigan’s forest products industry and the people who sustain it.
Warren Suchovsky of Stephenson, Michigan, dedicated more than six decades to advancing the timber industry. His influence can be seen across the state and beyond, including his instrumental role in launching the Michigan Master Logger Certification Program, as well as his service in numerous leadership and advisory positions at the local, state, and national levels. The scholarship established in his name serves as a lasting tribute to his passion for education, professionalism, and responsible forest management.
“Warren’s knowledge and understanding…was a great contribution to everyone in the industry. Warren was a very calm speaker [and a great listener],” said Glen Tolksdorf, who served with Warren on the Michigan Association of Timbermen board of directors. This scholarship reflects the values he lived by—hard work, stewardship, and investing in the next generation. We are proud to grow this program in his honor with the support of our partners.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a Michigan college or university and pursuing a degree in forestry or a closely related field, such as natural resources or forest products manufacturing. Applicants in broader programs, such as environmental science, may be asked to provide relevant coursework. Applications are also accepted for non-degree programs, including lumber grading, timber harvesting certificates, log truck driving school, or other coursework that directly supports the forest products industry.
In addition to financial assistance, the scholarship offers recipients valuable exposure to industry professionals and potential future employers.
Applications are currently being accepted through February 20, 2026, with the award being presented at the annual Timbermen’s Convention to be held at Boyne Mountain Resort, April 17th, 2026.
