Background

The Michigan Association of Timbermen has announced a $2,000 scholarship with support from GreenStone Farm Credit Services and the Michigan Forest Association. The scholarship supports students pursuing forestry and related fields. The Warren Suchovsky Scholarship Fund traditionally offers $1,000 to a Michigan student each year. This year, Greenstone Farm Credit Services pledged $500, as well as the Michigan Forest Association, bringing the total scholarship to $2,000.

"The Michigan Association of Timbermen is pleased to strengthen our Warren Suchovsky Scholarship Fund in coordination with the Michigan Forest Association and Greenstone Farm Credit Services. It is critical that we support aspiring students in their pursuit of education and careers in forestry and related fields," said Joe Doyle, President of MAT. "This collaboration demonstrates our collective dedication to the sustainable management of our state's valuable timber resources."

The Scholarship is named for Warren Suchovsky of Stephenson, Michigan, who has spent his 60+ year career dedicated to the advancement of the timber industry, which has grown in many ways due to the hard work and knowledge of industry supporters like himself. Warren Suchovsky’s accomplishments include the launch of the Michigan Master Logger certifcation program, and numerous leadership and advisory positions with various organizations within the local, state, and national levels.

GreenStone Farm Credit Services, based in East Lansing, Michigan, is Michigan and northeast Wisconsin’s largest agricultural lender and the country’s sixth largest association in the Farm Credit System. A member-owned cooperative, GreenStone owns and manages over $13 billion

Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a Michigan college or university, pursuing forestry or a related field, such as natural resources or forest product manufacturing field of study. Applicants who have chosen a broad-based field such as environmental science will be asked to provide a list of courses for that field.

Applications are also accepted for non-degree courses such as lumber grading, timber harvesting certificates, or other fields that directly impact the forest products industry, although the scholarship amount may be adjusted based on the costs associated with these courses.

The scholarship not only provides financial assistance but also offers networking opportunities with potential future employers. Applications are accepted from December 2023 to March 8, 2024, with the recipient announced on April 26, 2024.
